Tuesday trivia!

January 2, 2007 at 5:29 pm (Echos of the Damned)

Hmmm, maybe I’ll try to come up with a trivia question every Tuesday. No, this wont be a closed book test. Feel free to respond and answer/discuss the question if you want, but if you’d rather look up the answer, that’s fine too since most of my questions will probably be “off the wall” stuff that I found neat… not your typical, run-of-the-mill questions.

Todays question: How many times has the state of Texas been obliged to change its capital? Since this is the first question, I’ll make it multiple choice.

A) 5

B) 10

C) 15

 The answer tomorrow.

I’d love to say, “5″ just because no state should have more than 5, but then there is the factor that is Texas, so I’m going to go with the mid-risk option and pick “10″. I figure that should cover most of the historical turmoil that has surrounded the state. =0p

It’s a large state… lots of options for a capital city. Man, it’s like a whole ‘nother country down there.

    Correct answer – 15.

OMG! You are kidding me! I demand a re-count! List them =0p

Tough crowed! It wasn’t my question you know, it was off of a “trivia-a-day” calendar. Buuuut, I CAN prove that there were more than 10… after a bit of research, I can find 12.

    Texas
    Statehood in 1845

Los Adaes – 1721 – Colonial capital; now part of Louisiana
San Antonio de Bexar – 1772 – Colonial capital; now San Antonio
    Saltillo – 1824 – Coahuila y Tejas capitals
    Monclova – 1833
Washington – 1836 – Republic of Texas capital; now Washington-on-the-Brazos
Galveston – 1836 – Temporary Republic of Texas capital
Harrisburg – 1836 – Temporary Republic of Texas capital
Velasco – 1836 – Temporary Republic of Texas capital
Columbia – 1836 – Temporary Republic of Texas capital
Houston – 1837 – Republic of Texas capital
Austin – 1839 – Republic of Texas capital; named Waterloo until 1839 then named State capital when Texas became a state in 1845.

The wording is what fools you. You’re thinking of how many times they’ve changed it since they’ve been a state, which would be zero. But, before they were a state, and while they were their own Republic, I think a capital lasted only a year or so… well, those in 1836 weren’t so lucky.
